When we took delivery of the Swan there was a full inventory of headsails including three spinnakers, a storm Jib, regular jib, and three Genoa sails. There were also two mainsails.
Every single sail was rotten, had holes and rips, and we deemed them unsafe.
I worked with Quantum Sails in Richmond to begin the process of outfitting the boat.
The mainsail is superb! It’s really incredible to have all of the sail controls (adjustable back stay, halyard, leech cord, out haul and Cunningham, in addition to the main sheets and the boom vang. And two reefs.
We decided to choose a Genoa at 120% as it seemed to be the one choice that might be best for the winds of the SF Bay. Love the sail! The principal issue is that, despite manufacturers (Swan) recommendations, a headsail of that size is too much for winds over 18-20 knots for this vessel. I think it’ll be fine and dandy during our off season. It works wonders at winds under 15 kn. For example, we achieved a boat speed of 5.5 kn in 7.5 kn wind.
So, I had an approximate 95% jib constructed. It’s perfect. It’s easy to trim the main to balance the vessel with this headsail.
